Test week is a simple way for our members to internalise their goals. The people who step through our doors vary in so many ways, and one way in particular is the reason they attend. Everyone has different short term and long term goals, some are CrossFit specific while others may simply be to improve their overall fitness and quality of life.
Over the past few years we have seen a real benefit in focusing our programmes. We tend to block programmes together over 5 to 6 weeks with the aim of achieving simple outcomes.
For any block of training to work we need to know where we are at the start and at the finish. We need baseline results to see whether a training plan is working, this way it is not put down the chance or guess work. Fitness improvements will more than likely improve if we exercise more but at ISC we like to take an objective approach rather than a subjective one, even in its simplest of forms.
So what we have done is taken this simple approach and put our own CrossFit-ISC twist on it – Introducing Test Week.
The ISC Test Week will normally follow a similar format. Members are tested on:
- 2 workouts
- 2 cardio vascular bias elements for example a 2km Row time.
- 2 Skill demands – this could be bodyweight, Barbell, Kettlebell or anything in between
The focus on the following 6 weeks will then have a theme, including progressions for each test, in a variety of formats. We have found that while there are so many movements and exercises used in CrossFit, focusing on a small number means members have more time and understanding to progress.
Of course if we are having a Test Week this then leads to a Re-Test week! This is we can measure our members progress.
Above all else for the coaches of ISC it provides invaluable feedback into areas we can help improve and for members it provides motivation with not only in seeing progress but also in identifying parts of their training which could be improved.
